Data, design & development: Mathieu Benhamou, Julian Burgess, Christopher Cannon, Brittany Harris, Michael Keller and Brenda Zysman

Methodology: Some 20 publicly traded companies were selected by Bloomberg’s technology journalists using two criteria: influence and visibility. This list will be regularly reviewed and updated as mergers and acquisitions swallow and expand companies, smaller companies rise through the ranks, and companies that currently are private go public.

News sentiment: Sentiment scores were calculated by a proprietary Bloomberg algorithm, which analyzes thousands of news sources to determine if language contained in stories about each company was positive, negative or neutral. This algorithm detects sentiment signals distinctive to business and finance information. In the news sentiment charts, the positive values in green indicate that positive coverage outweighed negative coverage, and negative values in red indicate that negative coverage outweighed positive coverage. Bar length indicates news sentiment strength on a scale of –1 to 1. The charts display thirty days worth of data. Empty bars occur if no news on a company appears for a given day in that window, the day’s average sentiment was neutral, or the day's articles did not have enough valid information to determine a score. Updates daily.

R&D as a percent of revenue: For both research and development expenditures and revenue, the most recently available four quarters or two semiannuals of figures were used for each company. Updates are based on the company’s reporting frequency.

Return potential: This was calculated as the difference between the average of analysts’ 12-month target share prices and the company’s share price today. Only targets submitted in the past three months were included in the calculations. Updates daily.
