Be brave for the new world of technology – it will pay off - Telegraph.co.uk

Technology has become an integral part of many of our lives, but the good and the bad will always remain

It must be a bewildering world for my elderly in-laws. So far today, I have made a bank transfer on my smartphone, video-called my daughter, ordered my groceries online, skimmed various newspaper apps and wished a friend happy birthday (smiley face) on Facebook. All this from the comfort of my garden office via Wi-Fi and our house’s superfast broadband, of course.

Meanwhile, my in-laws, who live next door, bought their morning newspaper from the village shop and drove six miles into town to pay in a cheque, only to discover that the local branch of their bank is about to close down. At our insistence, they took their “brick” mobile phones with them, but they often forget. As they say, they managed perfectly fine without them.

But can’t technology do better than “fine”? In a way, it needs to, so embedded is it in our lives. My in-laws are by no means Luddites but their retirement, financed by a long and successful office-based career, is far removed from my own life as a home-based freelance and a quantum leap away from the world that their grandchildren will inherit.

Security nous will be essential in whatever career my children choose

As my youngest son learnt at school the other day, 50pc of the jobs he and his classmates hope to be doing in 10 years’ time have yet to be invented.

What can be predicted is that 40pc of those new jobs will be in a rapidly expanding “open economy” wherein self-employed, super-flexible freelance workers connect with each other and multiple employers across an ecosystem of private devices.

As we rely increasingly on these myriad connections and allow ever more minute details of our lives to be shared and stored in the ether, the need for IT security will become paramount.

It’s naive to assume that criminals are not just as innovative as the rest of us, and undoubtedly security nous will be essential in whatever career my children choose.

After all, technology might be changing the very essence of what it means to be human, as my in-laws will testify, but the good and the bad will remain. As we embrace connectivity, sharing and opportunity, simply acknowledging that could keep us safe.
