How is the technological landscape changing in 2019, and what innovations will we see in the future? originally appeared on Quora: the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.
Answer by Gary Shapiro, President and CEO at Consumer Technology Association, on Quora:
The two biggest stories coming out of CES 2019 are advancements in fifth generation cellular connectivity (5G) and artificial intelligence (AI). Both of these innovations will open the door to a world of convenience, precision and high-speed broadband.
As I write in Ninja Future, 5G will unleash some of the most promising innovations of our lifetime. It enables a world where instead of using our phones to navigate to our destinations, self-driving vehicles collect data from their surroundings — the roads and transportation infrastructure — to get us where we're going.
On 5G networks, our phones and networks will be more than 100-times faster than they are today. But it’s not just about speed. We'll be able to aggregate, analyze and share data at lightning-fast speeds, giving us amazing new opportunities for improving our systems and streamlining our services. Transportation, labor, commerce, entertainment, medicine — no industry will remain untouched. AI will impact lives in ways large and small - from providing you with the perfect movie recommendations to allowing doctors to quickly sort through massive data sets and find the needle in the haystack that allows us to cure our most pernicious diseases.
