MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -- Research shows 2018 will be one of the biggest years for fitness as studies say more Americans will be exercising this year than in years past. Millions across the country are beginning the new year with a fresh start with their fitness and health routines.
"I think a lot of it is I got stuck in a routine of going to work going home and it was basically from the desk to the couch," Patrick Farabaugh said.
Farabaugh is one of those millions looking to take his fitness to the next level. He has been training with Worth Personal Training for a year now, and hopes to improve even more in 2018.
"There is always more to learn, so I think it is going to be a really good year," Worth Personal Training owner Peter Kraus said.
Kraus is a fitness expert. He says high intensity interval training (HIIT) will be one of the biggest trends for 2018, alongside use of resistance bands.
"HIIT burns a ton of calories in a short period of time, " Kraus said.
HIIT is one of the most well-attended classes at the Princeton Club, according to President Andrew Haugen.
Haugen says over the years, Princeton Club has seen a wider range of ages coming through their doors. From 13-year-olds looking to improve in sports, to grandparents wanting to stay active, Haugen says more and more people continue to join.
"We're just helping people make a difference in their lives," Haugen said.
The old sang, "A good workout can't fix a bad diet," stands true says Fit Fresh Cuisine co-owner Sarah Berndt.
"Changing your diet and eating well, and focusing on nutrition can make the biggest impact," Berndt said.
Fit Fresh Cuisine has meal plans that use locally sourced food, and deliver the meals fully prepared to your door. Berndt says it's a nationwide trend, but other big businesses don't full prepare the meal for you.
"It's exciting to know we are helping to many people eat healthier," Berndt said.
People are letting their phones eat first by snapping pics of their meals and putting them on social media. Experts say social media has become a beacon for people to share their fitness journeys too.
"They are sharing their personal experiences and opening up to others. It's become a place to also help keep people holding themselves accountable," Kraus said.
Kraus says it's also become a large market where instructors and experts can share their workout routines and tips to others.
