Palm Beach Gardens Elementary wins district's Technology Challenge - Palm Beach Post

The school is partnering with Southeast Honor Flight to offer a Virtual Honor Flight for veterans on Saturday. The veteran roster includes 25 World War II veterans, 24 Korean War veterans and a Vietnam veteran. Student videographers traveled to Washington, D.C. last year on an Honor Flight and captured the day on video to create a virtual experience of visiting the memorials from a veteran’s perspective. The public is invited to the veterans welcoming reception in the courtyard outside the main school entrance gate. A 2:45 p.m. arrival is suggested for those wishing to greet the veterans after their program concludes in the auditorium. ALLAMANDA ELEMENTARY

The school has scheduled several events for Celebrate Literacy Week Florida! and National School Choice Week, which begin Monday. Parents and guardians of students in grades three through five are invited to a breakfast at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday to discuss and set academic and FSA testing goals for their children. After breakfast, they can stay and read with their children. A classroom door decorating contest takes place Jan. 25. Students and staff will dress as their favorite book characters for a literary character parade Jan. 26.

The third annual health and wellness expo, “Fitness, Food, and Friendship Around the World,” takes place 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 31 in the cafeteria. Dozens of vendors, including Triumph Kids, Team XTreme, Kidding Around Yoga, 9Round, Digital Vibez and North Palm Beach Tennis, will be on hand. The school and the Kiwanis of North Palm Beach are co-sponsoring the third annual Strive Five for the Hive 5K Run, 3K Walk at 8 a.m. March 11 at The Gardens Mall. Those who register at www.active.com (search for Allamanda) by Feb. 9 can participate in a contest to win a 2018 Honda. The first 300 registered participants will receive a race shirt. There will be trophies for first place, participant medals and breakfast at Brio Tuscan Grille for all registered participants. Proceeds go to local children’s charities and scholarships, as well as the school’s Health and Wellness program.

ST. CLARE CATHOLIC SCHOOL

The 27th annual Mardi Gras Festival will take place today through Sunday on the school grounds, 821 Prosperity Farms Road, North Palm Beach. The event includes rides, midway games , food, musical entertainment, a putting competition and vendors. Admission is free. Tickets for rides, games and food also will be available at the event. Winter open house sessions for new families are scheduled at 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Jan. 25.

Nine more elementary schools from Palm Beach County have been awarded the United States Department of Agriculture’s HealthierUS School Challenge Award: Belle Glade Elementary, Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary, Golden Grove Elementary, Jupiter Elementary, New Horizons Elementary and Pine Jog Elementary, silver; Del Prado Elementary, Discovery Key Elementary and Sunset Palms Elementary, bronze.

These schools will receive a HealthierUS School Challenge Award banner for display and will be presented with a plaque signed by Sonny Perdue, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. Schools will receive $500 for achieving bronze level and $1,000 for achieving silver, to spend on nutrition, wellness or garden-related items for their school.

As part of the Palm Beach Gardens Police Foundation scholarship program, the Herb and Penny Wender Scholarship Fund will present two $2,500 scholarships to assist students continue their education. The school district will observe Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day on Feb. 2 and encourages businesses and organizations throughout the county to show students how their classroom lessons apply in the workplace. Students from kindergarten through 12th grade may participate.
