Sony continues to work on the technology required for a transparent screen on a smartphone. Following on from previous patents around this technology, a newly published patent provides more details on the plans from the Japanese company.
The patent, plainly titled “Display Device And Electronic Apparatus”, covers the basic principles in its abstract:
A display device includes a display section having a first display surface and a second display surface facing each other. The display section includes a first display panel disposed on the first display surface side, and including a plurality of light emitting elements, and a second display panel disposed on the second display surface side, and including a plurality of light control elements each performing light control for control of transmission or reflection of incident light performing reflective image display utilising the reflection of the incident light.
Thanks to the details in this and other patents, the team at Let’s Go Digital has been able to put together some concept images of what a transparent Sony Xperia smartphone could look like.
As with all patents, there is no guarantee that this technology will make it through to retail models. Sony’s method uses two screens, which would be a draw on power, and the components required in a standard smartphone have to go somewhere, so there would be a significant bezel or chin using current techniques. And while a folding smartphone has been mentioned, Sony’s patent suggest that four screens would be needed.
Nevertheless, in a world where smartphones are tending towards an ‘all screen’ design with minimal bezels, a transparent screen is a natural next step. Couple that with AR software, and you have a rather nifty future concept of the smartphone.
